How to tell
- Crowds of motorbikes: Dense scooter traffic beside a shopping area strongly suggests Vietnam, especially Saigon.
- Frangipani median trees: White-flowered frangipani in the central strip points to tropical Southeast Asia.
- Wide boulevard, white dashes: Multi-lane road with plain white dashed lines fits new Vietnamese city districts.
Even at night, the first thing that jumps out is the knot of scooters waiting along the far side of the road. Few countries have motorbikes outnumbering cars so heavily, which narrows things to Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand or Taiwan. The frangipani trees in the median and the warm, humid feel rule out Taiwan's cooler streets, and the broad, freshly planned boulevard in front of a glossy mall fits Saigon's newer districts. A handy habit for Southeast Asia: always check driving side, because Vietnam drives on the right while Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia drive on the left. That one detail splits the region cleanly in half before you look at anything else.
Easily confused with
- Bangkok, Thailand: Thailand drives on the left; Vietnam drives on the right.
- Jakarta, Indonesia: Indonesia also drives left; check which side traffic flows.
Remember: Swarms of scooters plus tropical trees usually mean Vietnam.
