How to tell
- Muddy river with mangroves: Brown tidal river edged by grey-green mangroves suggests subtropical eastern Australia.
- Thiess company sign: Thiess is a big Australian builder, so its rooftop logo points to Australia.
- Palms and balcony towers: Pale apartment blocks with deep balconies and palms fit warm Queensland cities.
The colour of the water jumps out first: a wide, coffee-brown river looping through a city, with mangroves crowding one bank. That rules out most of Europe and cool climates straight away. The skyline of pale, balconied apartment towers with palms on top says warm and wealthy, and a rooftop logo for an Australian construction firm nails the country. Low forested hills on the horizon and the crumbly rock in the foreground fit southeast Queensland rather than flat, dry Perth or Adelaide. A habit worth keeping for Australia: tree colour tells you latitude. Dusty grey-green gum trees and scrub mean the dry south and interior, while lush dark greens, mangroves and palms push you north toward Brisbane and the Queensland coast.
Easily confused with
- Perth, Western Australia: Perth's Swan River is wide and bluish, with flat land behind.
Remember: Brown winding river, mangroves and wooded hills behind: think Brisbane.
