How to tell
- Embroidered round caps: Kuma caps, the colourful stitched brimless hats, are worn daily almost only in Oman.
- Robe with neck tassel: A collarless white dishdasha with a short neck tassel is typical Omani dress.
- Red flag with white, green: A mostly red flag with white and green bands points to Oman among Gulf flags.
The people catch my eye before the buildings. White robes and date palms put you somewhere on the Arabian Peninsula, but those men wear stitched round caps with no headscarf over them, and that habit is very Omani. Neighbours in the UAE, Qatar or Saudi Arabia cover the head with a cloth held by a black cord. The robes also carry a little tassel at the neck, another Omani touch. The flag line and the half-built steel dome suggest a big civic project, which in Oman most often means the capital area. A habit worth keeping for other Gulf rounds: read headwear first, because cloth versus cap splits Oman from most of its neighbours fast.
Easily confused with
- United Arab Emirates: Emiratis wear white headscarves with black cords, not embroidered caps.
- Saudi Arabia: Saudis favour red-checked headscarves; caps show only underneath.
Remember: Bare embroidered caps on men in white robes almost always means Oman.
